PUBLISHER'S SUMMARY:

Josh Groban has been a self-described "scribbler" of poetry and lyrics for most of his life. Since the release of his 2001 self-titled debut album, Mr. Groban has sold well over five million albums worldwide. He has also made scores of internationally televised appearances, including his appearance at the closing ceremonies of the Salt Lake City Olympics and his popular 2003 PBS Great Performances special. Mr. Groban performed live at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre for an Actors' Fund benefit performance of Chess, bringing to fruition a long-standing ambition of this former Carnegie Mellon musical theater major. On the subject of his latest album, Closer, Mr. Groban said, "What most people know about me, they know through my music. This time, I've tried to open that door as wide as possible. These songs are a giant step closer to who I really am and what my music is all about. Hence the title." Recorded in 2003, the CD boasts a guest-artist roster led by the world-class violinist Joshua Bell and the innovative French duo Deep Forest. "To me, these songs present something beautiful," Mr. Groban said. "Sometimes they're personal, and sometimes you can just appreciate the story, even if it's not mine. It all comes from the same place."

Robin Pogrebin is a reporter on the culture desk of The New York Times. She has covered cultural institutions, established and emerging artists, theater news, the New York City cultural budget, and the National Endowment for the Arts, among other topics. Before joining the culture desk, she covered the media for the business section and, prior to that, city news for The Metro Section. Before coming to The Times, she was an associate producer for Peter Jennings's documentary unit at ABC News and, prior to that, a staff reporter at The New York Observer.
