Kiefer Sutherland currently stars in the critically acclaimed Fox drama 24, for which he has won a Golden Globe Award and a SAG Award, as well as garnering two Emmy nominations. He recently wrapped production on the independent film The River Queen, an epic period drama shot in New Zealand and directed by Vincent Ward. He also recently starred in the Warner Bros. film Taking Lives and last year starred in the Fox film Phone Booth.

Mr. Sutherland's first major role was in the Canadian drama The Bay Boy. Following his success in The Bay Boy, he eventually moved to Los Angeles and began landing television appearances. In 1992, he starred opposite Ray Liotta and Forest Whitaker in Orion Pictures' Article 99 and in Castlerock's military drama A Few Good Men. In 1993, Mr. Sutherland made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Showtime film Last Light, in which he also starred opposite Forest Whitaker. In the 1996 Paramount thriller Eye for an Eye, he portrayed an unremorseful, brutal murderer opposite Sally Field and Ed Harris. Later that summer, he co-starred with Samuel L. Jackson, Sandra Bullock, and Matthew McConaughey in A Time to Kill. Mr. Sutherland's other film credits include The Three Musketeers, Flatliners, 1969, Flashback, Young Guns, Bright Lights, Big City, The Lost Boys, Promised Land, At Close Range, and Stand By Me.

Dinitia Smith joined The New York Times as a culture reporter in May 1995. Before that, from 1981 to 1995, she was a writer on the arts for New York magazine. Ms. Smith is the author of three novels and has published short stories in many magazines and journals. She has been a book reviewer for many publications, has taught creative writing at various institutions, including Columbia University, and has had her films shown at prestigious festivals.
