Daniel Handler is the author of the novels The Basic Eight and Watch Your Mouth and serves as the legal, literary, and social representative of Lemony Snicket, whose sequence of books for children, known collectively as A Series of Unfortunate Events, have been alleged international best sellers. A film based on the first three books of the series was released in December 2004. Mr. Handler has worked intermittently and inexplicably in film (as screenwriter for the films Rick and Kill the Poor) and journalism and has been commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony for a piece in collaboration with composer Nathaniel Stookey. Mr. Handler is also an adjunct accordionist for the pop group The Magnetic Fields.Julie Salamon, a culture writer and critic for The New York Times since May 2000, has also been a reporter and film critic for The Wall Street Journal. Her latest book is Rambam's Ladder: A Meditation on Generosity and Why It Is Necessary to Give. Salamon is the author of five other books, White Lies, a novel; The Devil's Candy, a study of Hollywood filmmaking gone awry; The Net of Dreams, a family memoir; The Christmas Tree, a novella that was a New York Times best seller; and Facing the Wind, a nonfiction narrative about a killing and the lives affected by it.
