Patricia Clarkson finished production on two independent films in 2004, The Dying Gaul and The Woods. She also co-starred in Miracle and returned to the stage as Blanche DuBois in "A Streetcar Named Desire". In 2003, Ms. Clarkson was nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Critics' Choice Award and an Independent Spirit Award for her role in Pieces of April. Her performance in The Station Agent earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Actress and for Best Ensemble Cast. At the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, she won the Jury Prize for Outstanding Performance for Pieces of April, The Station Agent, and All the Real Girls. In 2002, she won an Emmy for her guest-starring role on HBO's Six Feet Under and best supporting actress awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics for her performance in Far From Heaven. Other film credits include Dogville, The Green Mile, High Art, Everybody's All-American, The Dead Pool and The Untouchables.Hilary Swank won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry. In addition to the Oscar, the portrayal earned her the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama and best actress prizes from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Chicago Film Critics Association, and the Broadcast Film Critics Association. She also won the Breakthrough Performance award from The National Board of Review, as well as the Premiere Magazine Spotlight Award, and was named the ShoWest Star of Tomorrow. Ms. Swank's other films include The Gift, The Affair of the Necklace, Insomnia, Iron Jawed Angels, RedDust, and Million Dollar Baby. Jodi Kantor is the editor of the Arts & Leisure section.
